Formula

X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y
X as a percent of Y = X ÷ Y × 100
Percentage change = (Y − X) ÷ |X| × 100
Y increased by X% = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100)

A percentage is a fraction of 100, so every percentage calculation is a multiplication or division by 100 combined with a ratio.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 20% of 150 = 0.20 × 150 = 30.

How do I work out a percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

Is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease the same value?

No. 100 increased by 50% is 150; 150 decreased by 50% is 75. Each change applies to a different base.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages (5% to 7% is 2 points), while percent change measures the relative change (a 40% increase).
