Water treatment and hot water, explained

Hard water and water heaters are linked: scale shortens heater life, and softeners are sized from hardness and household use. These tools use the same hardness and capacity formulas water treatment dealers use, and show them.

Softening treats hardness only; it is not a drinking water safety assessment. Gas and electrical work on water heaters should be done by a licensed plumber.

Frequently asked questions

What water hardness unit should I use?

Most U.S. softeners use grains per gallon (gpg). Divide ppm or mg/L by 17.1 to convert, or use the hardness converter.

Does a softener make water safe to drink?

No. It removes hardness minerals only. Have your water tested and follow local health guidance for other contaminants.
