How it works

  2. Choose a drop: about 8 in for a lap-length look, 15 in for half drop, or 29 in for floor length on a 30 in table.
  3. Read the ideal cloth size and the closest standard size.

Formula

Round: cloth diameter = table diameter + 2 × drop
Rectangle: cloth = (width + 2 × drop) × (length + 2 × drop)
Actual drop = (cloth − table) ÷ 2

The drop hangs on both sides, so it is added twice to each dimension. Standard sizes: rounds of 60, 70, 90, 108, 120 and 132 in; rectangles of 52 × 52, 52 × 70, 60 × 84, 70 × 70, 60 × 102, 60 × 120, 90 × 90, 90 × 132 and 90 × 156 in. A stock size is accepted if it is within 2 in. of the ideal overall size.

Common drops

Everyday dining cloths hang about 6–10 in., just reaching guests’ laps. Events often use a half drop of about 15 in. For formal events and buffet tables, floor-length linens hang to about ½–1 in. above the floor — on a standard 30 in. table, a 29–30 in. drop.

Familiar pairings: a 6 ft banquet table takes a 90 × 132 in. cloth for floor length or 60 × 102 in. for a half drop; an 8 ft table takes 90 × 156 in.; a 60 in. round takes a 120 in. round cloth to the floor.
